Insulin plays a significant role in many diets and weight loss concepts. The hormone insulin is formed in the pancreas. In addition to several other functions, it is the hormone in charge of lowering blood sugar levels. The natural antagonist of insulin is another hormone – glucagon. It is secreted when the blood sugar level is too low. Together, these hormones balance out the concentration of glucose, a simple sugar in our blood, so that it is never too low or too high.
When we eat a meal high in carbohydrates, the blood sugar level rises. When our body registers this, insulin is released so that the glucose can pass from the blood into the cell interior. This is so the body may obtain the available energy. Otherwise, the glucose is still stored in the cells – but not in this form. It is converted into the storable form of glycogen, a multiple sugar, which is composed of several glucose units. Once you need it, this glycogen can be converted back into glucose.
However, when this is the case, the insulin is not needed for the blood sugar to increase. Instead it takes the previously mentioned glucagon. Patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus need to inject insulin because their bodies are unable to make sufficient amounts on their own. Put simply, a hyperglycaemia occurs, because glucose can not be transported to the body’s cells from the blood.
In addition, insulin has a so-called obesogenic effect. That is, it limits the fat loss in the cells, but at the same time promotes the storage of new fat in the adipose tissue. Different diet concepts will reduce this effect and take advantage of it. A low carb diet avoids a rapid rise in blood sugar levels and the secretion of insulin. This is usually implemented in the form of an almost complete abandonment of carbohydrates, such as in the Atkins diet. The slim in your sleep diet, however, only prohibits the nightly consumption of carbohydrates. This is to keep insulin levels low and not to interfere with the nighttime fat burning.
