Low Carb Diet

Low Carb Diet

A low carb diet is all about reducing the amount of carbohydrates one ingests. Usually, about 50% of our diet should consist of carbohydrates. Since carbohydrates act as our body’s main source of energy, not eating them would force the body to use it’s own source of energy- i.e. the excess fat deposits. However, the body breaks down muscles before it breaks down fat. To prevent this, it is important to supply your body with plenty of proteins and amino acids while doing the low carb diet.

During this diet, you should focus on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and dairy products. Different variations of this diet have been around since the 19th century, all based on the low carb principle. Generally, only meals high in carbohydrates are eliminated or replaced with protein-rich foods, similar to the “Lose weight while sleeping” diet by Dr. Detlef Pape.

Other concepts based on the low carb diet are ketogenic, i.e. no carbohydrates at all, even if there is no medical indication, such as diabetes.

In the Logi diet, which is also a low carb diet, the glycemic index is also taken into account. It refers to the effect on the increase of blood sugar levels and the associated insulin secretion, as opposed to the actual amount of carbohydrates consumed. Followers of the low carb diet believe that high carbohydrate meals in the evening disrupt the nighttime fat burning process.

Low carb diets usually lead to the desired weight loss. Whether this is due to the reduction of carbohydrates, or the related reduction of calories is scientifically controversial.

Since plenty of fruits and vegetables are consumed, an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals exists in most versions of the low carb diet.

Low Carb Diet Disadvantages

Depending on the chosen variant, you may want to speak with a physician before trying a low carb diet. Above all, the complete absence of carbohydrates can quickly lead to a circulatory collapse and concentration problems.

The high protein content can also worsen gout and kidney failure or cause it to occur for the first time. Furthermore, physical activity is often not considered, only faster weight loss.

Conclusion – Our Opinion on the Low Carb Diet

The moderate form of a low carb diet may be advisable, but the more radical variants are not recommended. Their usefulness is scientifically refuted and they inevitably cause a yo-yo effect.
