South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was developed by a cardiologist named Arthur Agatston. This diet is basically a modified version of the Atkins principle. The corresponding book was a bestseller.

An important point in which the South Beach Diet differs from the Atkins version is the classification of fats. Arthur Agatston divided them up into good and bad fats: Vegetable oils and nuts are permitted, because they contain essential fatty acids. Animal fats, however, should be avoided.

Carbohydrates are are also divided: Carbohydrates in the form of legumes, fruits and wholemeal bread are allowed (“good carbs”). Products containing white flour or a lot of sugar, however, should not be eaten (“bad carbs”). In this respect, the South Beach Diet also contains elements of the Low-glycemic diet, because the blood sugar levels should be kept as low as possible, yet remain constant. The South Beach diet is divided into three phases.

In Phase 1, Carbohydrates are almost completely eliminated: Rice, pasta, potatoes, all baked goods, sugary foods, and fruits and vegetables with a high sugar content, are not allowed during this time. This phase lasts a maximum of 14 days, then the amount of carbohydrates is slowly increased in phase two. Phase three may serve as a lifelong diet.

The south beach diet contains lots of fruits and vegetables. The distinction between good and bad fats is more than useful, and is not taken into consideration in many other diets. Especially in the first two weeks, several pounds are lost. This makes participants much more motivated. Phase three corresponds with official dietary recommendations, making it suitable for a long-term diet.

Phase one of the South Beach Diet is pretty radical. It can quickly lead to an undesirable lack of fiber, vitamins and carbohydrates. Dieters with gout and kidney problems should consult their doctor beforehand. Also, eating out is difficult with this diet plan.
